George Combe's A System of Phrenology, 5th edn, 2 vols. 1853.

Combe's System of Phrenology was perhaps the most detailed and authoritative popular phrenology text ever written. Virtually every subject touched by phrenology was treated here- from mesmerism to racism. Of the many works he produced on the subject, this was the deluxe version selling for a hefty 21 shillings and with 1037 pages, 6 plates and 61 woodcut illustrations. Every page and image is reproduced here. System of Phrenology began as Combe's first book in 1819 under the title Essays on Phrenology. The second edition of 1825 bore the title System of Phrenology. The work was translated into French and German (1833) and remained in print throughout the century. See a widely-read review of the book by Francis Jeffrey and a review from The Medico-Chirurgical Review. 1831. pp.2.
